Some of us, however, have a baby who cries too frequently or too long and who is difficult to soothe despite all of our best efforts. As parents, we are designed to react strongly to our baby’s crying. We instinctively know that when babies cry, it means something is wrong with the baby that needs to be addressed. Being unable to find the root cause of the crying can create doubts of our parenting skills and create tremendous stress and frustration. A baby’s prolonged and incessant crying can unfortunately even lead some parents to perceive the baby’s crying to be manipulative and in the worst cases this belief can lead to violent outbursts from the parents. Shaken Baby Syndrome, a potential result from such outbursts, can tragically cause irreparable damage to the baby’s brain1.
In the Western world, we live in a culture that highly values independence. Some parents expect newborns to begin learning

The growing popularity of babywearing in our modern society makes more parents aware of an amazing tool to meet their children’s need to be close to them while keeping up with a busy schedule. Very young babies feel most secure when they in their parents’ arms, where food and warmth are readily available. A toddler can be kept safe from vehicles or other dangers in public, and receive the reassurance that a loving caregiver provides when they become overstimulated. As with any tool, there are guidelines to make its use as safe as possible.

Every day we make decisions about all sorts of things, and our decisions are influenced by our preferences. We all have a way in which we’d like something done no matter how big or small. So when it’s one of the BIGGEST events you'll ever experience like birth, having preferences written in advance is a smart idea.
So, what exactly are Birth Preferences?
It’s a document that communicates what you would preferably like to happen during and after your baby’s birth, whether that's in a hospital, a birth centre or at home.
The phrase ‘Birth Plan’ is still widely used, but I prefer the phrase ‘Birth Preferences’ because birth by its very nature is unpredictable, so by using the word ‘plan’ we may be putting ourselves at a disadvantage should the birth not go ‘to plan’.
Your Birth Preferences are a list of things you would ideally like to happen, not a set plan.
All maternity hospitals have their own policies, and they can differ, so do a little research

To celebrate the launch of the NEW Ergobaby Natural Curve Nursing Pillow, we asked our resident expert, Midwife Nikki Khan to share her top tips for supporting mums through breastfeeding.
The key to a successful, and enjoyable, breastfeed is getting the latching correct, which all comes down to positioning. If baby is in the incorrect position whilst feeding not only could there be problems with latching and sore nipples, but baby could have issues with swallowing or may develop gastric reflux, and mum can easily start to get back and arm pain.
There are lots of different positions that work brilliantly for a comfortable and successful breastfeed, whilst using a high quality nursing pillow is a must-have for ensuring optimum comfort. However, before you start thinking about positions and nursing pillows, remember these basics to a successful feed:
i) Make sure you are comfortable in
