Do you wear your baby as often as possible? Us too! Did you know that you can wash a baby carrier? With frequent use, your baby carrier will probably go through the washing machine regularly. After all, stains and spills are standard for the course with babies - milk goes astray, nappies leak and don’t even start us on spit up!
Washing your baby carrier more often is not a bad thing, after all, our Ergobaby baby carriers are durable and long-lasting. Otherwise, we wouldn't have our 10-year ErgoPromise limited Lifetime guarantee. Nevertheless, some of the fabric fibres will come off with every wash. This is true not only for our baby carriers, but for all garments that you wash.
This means that tiny fibres of microplastic can end up in the waste water every time you wash your clothes and baby carrier in your washing machine. And that can add up! According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), between 200,000 and 500,000 tonnes of microplastics from textiles end up in the global marine environment every year. But you can help prevent this.
Washing a baby carrier: protect the materials and the environment with GUPPYFRIEND.
Protecting our planet for the future of our little ones is particularly important to us. That's why Ergobaby has an extensive sustainability programme. We are always on the lookout for new manufacturing methods and materials that will help us conserve our planet's resources and reduce waste.
Our Aerloom baby carrier is made from 87 per cent recycled plastic bottles. And with Everlove, we've created the first baby carrier buyback, repair and resale programme that gives baby carriers a second life, making them fit for longer use. Thanks to the GUPPYFRIEND brand, we have now found a way to reduce the amount of microplastics that end up in the environment through washing water and at the same time protect the fabrics of your baby carriers. Sounds great, right?

GUPPYFRIEND Washing Bag: how it works
Tiny fibres of your clothes break off every time you wash them and end up in the wastewater. The GUPPYFRIEND brand has developed a wash bag for synthetic garments to be gentler on fabrics, so fewer fibres break off. It also catches the tiny plastic fibres and prevents them from entering our environment with the wash water.
How to wash a baby carrier?
It's simple: make sure to fasten all buckles, put your baby carrier in the GUPPYFRIEND wash bag, then use mild detergent free of bleach, perfumes, dyes, chlorine, or optical brighteners, at 30°C. When you remove the damp carrier / clothes from the GUPPYFRIEND Washing Bag, remove the deposited fibres from the hem and dispose of them with your usual waste. Air dry your carrier and that's it!
The GUPPYFRIEND Washing Bag is available to buy from Ergobaby here or you can head to GUPPYFRIEND to find more information about microplastics.
