Today, we are going to delve into the topic of oxytocin, the love hormone.

Oxytocin: more than just a cuddle hormone

Skin to skin contact and physical closeness with your little one produces a neurohormone called oxytocin. Oxytocin is a bonding hormone and is very important for child development. It also promotes milk production and helps to make breast/chest feeding possible. Oxytocin is not only present between parent and child when they cuddle, sexual activity with your partner also produces oxytocin. During sex, our bodies are flooded with it. It increases pleasure and creates a feeling of deep connection between two sexual partners during orgasm.

Oxytocin for a quick birth

The name Oxytocin comes from the ancient Greeks, meaning “quick birth”. During pregnancy, your hypothalamus (the place where the hormone originates) works at full speed to produce oxytocin. This process is preparing your body for birth. Oxytocin is also responsible for inducing labour.

Human relationships need oxytocin

For decades oxytocin was only known as a birth hormone. However, it plays a key role in the coexistence of human beings. It positively influences social behaviours, making us more empathetic, promotes pair bonding, strengthens trust in other people and can dampen fear and aggression. Oxytocin can lower stress hormone levels and regulate heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar and breathing rate. In animal studies, oxytocin has been proven to promote growth and help wounds heal faster. These are all positive effects that can benefit you and your little ones development.

We encourage you to allow your oxytocin to run at full speed. Carry your babies as often as you and cuddle your loved ones often. Your bodies and souls will thank you!
